Since 1999, SouthRiver Development Corporation has helped transform century-old historic landmark Fairfax Hall from its former use, as a hotel and college, to its current splendor. Fifty-four elderly families now occupy the building, and the beautiful dining room is a backdrop for civic and social functions. Both the interior and exterior of the structure have been restored to their former glory to retain historic character. Fairfax Hall is a superb example of historic preservation melded with affordable housing--the ideal amalgam of multiple community objectives.

FAIRFAX HALL HISTORY

Located on a hillside overlooking the City of Waynesboro, Fairfax Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Fairfax Hall was constructed in 1890 as the grand, Queen Anne-style Brandon Hotel, able to accommodate two hundred guests. In 1913 the historic structure was converted to the Brandon Institute, a small coeducational college. In 1920, its name and use changed again to Fairfax Hall, a finishing school for young women, which subsequently expanded to an accredited junior college before closing in 1975. Until 1993, the building had limited use as an academy for staff development with the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Department of Corrections.

At Fairfax Hall you will find a spacious, affordable, and grand historic home, centrally located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley.
